#Fitness Challenge: A healthier and fitter community

As the whole country delved into the fitness mode through the ‘Hum Fit toh India Fit’ fitness challenge, the institute also joined the league and encouraged its faculty, staff and students to work consciously towards maintaining their health. The institute organised a Fitness Challenge on June 14 as part of the closing of its 25-day Fitness Summer Camp. The camp commenced on May 21. Meticulously planned  by the Gymnasium Committee, the Fitness Challenge saw an enthusiastic participation of over 110 staff and faculty members, along with students and summer interns. The challenge consisted of a cascade of exercises; the top 10 performers were declared as fittest and were rewarded with medals. Participants Parth Upadhyay and Charu Oberoi expressed, “The camp was motivating and refreshing, we feel healthier and fitter. And, now we are very serious about maintaining our fitness.” Mr Dinesh Parmar, Sports Officer remarked, “This is only a beginning and we will organise more such camps in...

Aerospace materials in focus at IITGN

The Advanced Materials Processing Research Group at the institute hosting a thought-provoking workshop on the subject “Aerospace Materials: Microstructure, Fracture and Fatigue” as a Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) course. The course was inaugurated by Air Vice Marshal A K Gupta (VSM), Senior Maintenance Staff Officer (SMSO) of South Western Air Command (SWAC). Taught by Dr Kumar V Jata, CEO, Jata Materials Solutions, USA, the course comprised lectures and tutorials, and culminated on June 22. Dr Jata has been a fellow of Air Force Research Labs in 2006 and ASM International in 1998. The course focussed on various microstructures that can be produced in structural metals particularly in aluminum, titanium and nickel-based superalloys and how one can manipulate the microstructure to produce desirable properties. The product forms and heat treatment tempers needed for aerospace industries were discussed. There was also an emphasis on the use of aluminum alloys in the automotive industry and shipbuilding. Researchers from Indian Air Force, industry, Defense Research Labs and various academic institutes from across the country participated in the course. A 10-day GIAN course titled “Aerospace Materials: Microstructure, Fracture and Fatigue” was inaugurated yesterday by Air Vice Marshal A K Gupta (VSM), Senior Maintenance Staff Officer (SMSO) of South Western Air Command (SWAC). Aerospace materials are one of the most important ingredient of any aircraft. Just 0.1 per cent improvement in aerospace materials can give you an increased payload output of 20 per...

A “green” day and a better life ahead

The institute has been a torchbearer in environment conservation and has instituted several sustainable green initiatives on campus. As India played the role of the global host for World Environment Day 2018, IITGN celebrated it with a similar fervour and enthusiasm, encouraging people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. This theme this year – Beat plastic Pollution – was celebrated widely across continents as people were apprised how there is an urgent need to reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic. The Green Office at IITGN joined hands with Hara Pitara – Social 1.0, a green market platform to promote eco-friendly life, to bring handpicked green brands and products on campus. The participating green brands exhibited various products such as reusable cloth shopping bags, sanitary pads, handcrafted jewellery inspired by nature, beauty care and authentic farm products as well as dying crafts to support artisans from various regions of India. An e-waste collection centre was also set up at the venue. The event was hosted for IITGN’s students, faculty and staff members, and their families to create environmental awareness and encourage them to switch to more sustainable options in day-to-day life. The event received an overwhelming response as people joined in large numbers. The celebration included several fun-filled activities, including a drawing competition for children and hands-on workshops. Children of staff and faculty members actively participated and the Pugmark Painting workshop remained a major highlight wherein they were given plain moulds of real...

MSc student bags Ronald Drever Scholarship

Ayatri Singha will pursue doctoral studies in gravitational waves at the University of Glasgow. Ayatri Singha, a student of MSc Physics at the institute, has been awarded the prestigious Ronald Drever Scholarship. Ayatri will pursue doctoral studies in gravitational waves at the University of Glasgow (UOG).  The scholarship was funded through a £500-thousand bequest from Prof Ronald Drever’s family to the UOG’s School of Physics and Astronomy. Professor Drever’s seminal work in Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking enabled the discovery of the first gravitational wave signal in advanced-Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors. I am feeling excited about joining the UOG in October. I am going to work on instrumentation for gravitational wave detection and advanced detector configurations there, which may impact the next-generation detectors including the upcoming LIGO India...
