Camaraderie and high team spirit marks Disha Cup 2018

Participating teams IITGN Suraksha: Security services  IITGN Rakhrakhav: Maintenance services  IITGN Urja: Mess services IITGN Sahyog: Office boys  IITGN Swachhata: Housekeeping services  IITGN Aavagaman: Drivers  IITGN Tandurast: Horticulture, groundsmen and Canara Bank staff  IITGN Sab ka Sath Sab ka Vikas: Hostel facility services, shop employees and laundry staff, etc. Camaraderie, glee and enthusiasm filled the spirits of IITGN support staff members when they took to field during the much-sought-after annual sports event – Disha Cup. Around 130 players from the institute’s outsourced workforce actively participated in the fourth edition of the tournament organised during June 22-23. Disha Cup is an initiative of Physical Education Section of IITGN. It serves as a platform for the service providers to display their skills in the nationa’s favourite sport – cricket. Mr P K Chopra, registrar and Prof D P Roy, senior visiting faculty inaugurated the tournament. The objective of the tournament is to encourage sportsmanship, inculcate team spirit and promote healthy competition among the participants, therefore shaping their personality and grooming their hidden talent in the sport. After three days of interesting game on the ground, IITGN Tandurast emerged as the wineer of the tournament. It won the final match by five wickets while IITGN Sahyog became the runner-up. International Yoga Day celebrations in full swing

On the fourth International Yoga Day, the institute organised special activities to join in the festivities. The entire IITGN community, including students, faculty, staff and their family members, enthusiastically participated in the morning demonstration and practice of yoga asanas by Mr Dinesh Parmar, Sports Coordinator and his team. The participants were also apprised of specific benefits of the asanas alongside. Yoga was followed by a presentation of informative videos from the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India as per the protocol. A combined lecture and demonstration session on Yoga: personal experiences and perspectives was also organised. Yoga instructor Hemant Shah guided the participants on various topics such as correct ways to practice yoga and pranayama, specific yoga asanas for diabetic patients, how to do time management for regular yoga practice ,etc. Teaching associate Mana Shah shared her experiences on benefits of yoga in today’s stressful lifestyle. Special efforts initiated to attract more girls at the institute

I strongly encourage girl students to consider admission to various IITs and IITGN in particular. Besides top-quality education, the campus life at IITGN is quite vibrant. In an effort to improve the number of female students across the IITs, special supernumerary seats have been created starting this year. The move is aimed at ensuring that at least 14 per cent of the students in each branch at various IITs is women. After successfully organising an Open House for all students qualifying the JEE Advanced exam, IITGN has also initiated special initiatives for reaching out to aspiring female candidates. The institute has set up a special helpdesk for female applicants to address their various queries. A webpage and a Facebook page have also been created to reach out and help the women candidates. JEE Open House 2018 clears doubts of future IITians

The institute organised JEE Open House on June 17 this year. Organised for the students clearing JEE Advanced exam and their parents each year, the event is aimed at providing guidance that helps them choose from among the different engineering branches across IITs. A large number of students had registered their interest in participating in the event this year. Sharing the objective of JEE Open House at IITGN, Prof Pratik Mutha, Dean of Academic Affairs said, “Students often aren’t aware of various disciplines, programmes and courses of study offered at various IITs, and they may also have a lot of confusion and misconceptions. The JEE Open House is a platform to give students and their parents a deeper insight into various opportunities and possibilities at the IITs. The idea is to help the prospective students in making informed choices of institute and discipline”.
