The institute organised JEE Open House sessions in Delhi, Mumbai and Gandhinagar for JEE Advanced-qualified students and their parents. The programme was aimed at addressing queries about IIT admission, academic programmes and IIT Gandhinagar ecosystem.
IITGN received an overwhelming response to the programme; more than 500 participants, including students and their parents/guardians, attended these Open House sessions held on June 22 in Delhi and on June 23 in Gandhinagar and Mumbai.
In Delhi Open House, people had come from Delhi and nearby areas like Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Agra. Mumbai Open House had participants from Mumbai, its nearby towns and Nashik. Having a full-day session with a campus tour, Open House at IITGN campus received the maximum footfall, with participants from all over the state and from other cities as well. These included Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Mehsana, Palanpur, Patan, Surat, New Delhi, Chennai, Pune and so on.
The students and their parents were most curious about branch selection, project works, research and higher studies opportunities, the possibility of branch change at IITGN, dual major programme and other unique initiatives of IITGN. Prof Sudhir K Jain, director, IITGN and Dean (Academic Affairs), Dean (Student Affairs), Coordinator (Alumni Relations), Associate Dean (Student Welfare), along with faculty, students and alumni of IITGN guided the participants in various sessions.
There were several questions about many of the unique aspects of IITGN, including its flexible curriculum focused on overall development and long-term success, its student-centric approach, excellent facilities and liberal financial aid programs. There were also several questions about IITGN’s liberal branch change policy and flexible options like dual majors, dual degrees and minor programmes.
It was shared that IITGN’s curriculum is futuristic and focuses on the overall development of students. Flexibility is built into the curriculum with numerous electives, liberal branch change norms, various “minor” and “honours” programmes and a large number of short courses offered by guest scholars. Students can also opt for a dual major programme during their course of study to earn an additional BTech degree in the second branch of their choice. For example, a student in Chemical Engineering could opt for a second BTech in Computer Science. Students can also choose to sign up for the dual-degree programme that enables students to get an MTech or an MSc degree in a branch of their choice (possibly different from their BTech branch) in addition to the BTech degree usually by spending an additional year. Two separate degrees are awarded upon successful completion of the requirements of the two programmes.
The participants of the Open House appreciated IITGN’s student-centric approach emphasising student responsibility, independence and physical & emotional wellbeing. IITGN prides itself in maintaining a ragging-free campus and being a high level of ethical conduct in all academic and non-academic matters.
Participants were also happy to hear about the institute’s very liberal financial aid and scholarship programmes which ensure that no student feels disadvantaged due to their financial situation. IITGN provides very generous grants and loans as per the need of the student to support academic requirements, excellence activities (including international internship), and in some cases, personal expenses. This includes a flat ₹2 lakh per year (for four years) for top 1,000 JEE-advanced rank holders and students who have represented India in one of the recognised international Olympiads.
The excellent and diverse outcomes of our students, including excellent placements, a large proportion of students opting for higher studies, student innovations, patents and vibrant startup culture, were also highlighted. Details about flagship programmes at IITGN such as the Foundation Programme, Explorer Fellowship and Invent@IITGN were also provided.
The excellent facilities, including the centrally air-conditioned hostels, award-winning campus, the recent recognition of Eat Right Campus and emphasis on quality food and health, were heavily appreciated by the attendees.
