Six of IITGN PhD scholars have received the Prime Minister Research Fellowship for the May 2020 cycle, which is one of the best acceptance rate among the newer IITs.

Six doctoral students of IITGN – Ashish Tiwari, Kailash Prasad, Prasanna Kulkarni, Rajes Ghosh, Sachinkumar Suthar, and Yogesh Singh – have bagged the prestigious Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) for the May 2020 cycle. The acceptance rate of IITGN for the fellowship is one of the best among the second-generation IITs.

Around 627 nominations were received from several eminent national-level institutions of India including the IITs, IISc, NITs, IISERs, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the University of Hyderabad, out of which 319 applications were recommended for the PMRF. The competitive fellowship will help the students connect with brilliant minds from industry as well as academia and showcase their work during the annual meet that is organised for PMRF candidates by the Government of India. It will also help the scholars to improve their research quality as the top-notch-level national review committee will continuously review their work and provide feedback.

Prasanna Kulkarni and Yogesh Singh are from the Mechanical Engineering discipline; Ashish Tiwari, Sachinkumar Suthar, and Kailash Prasad are from Electrical  Engineering; whereas Rajes Ghosh is from the Physics discipline.

ABOUT PMRF

The Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme has been designed for improving the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country. With attractive fellowships, the scheme seeks to attract the best talent into research thereby realising the vision of development through innovation. The institutes which can offer PMRF include all the IITs, all the IISERs, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and some of the top Central Universities/NITs that offer science and/or technology degrees. The candidates are selected through a rigorous selection process and their performance is reviewed suitably through a national convention. The selected candidates not only get a chance to pursue PhD in top institutes of India but also they get financial benefits. They get Rs 70,000/- per month for the first two years, Rs 75,000/- per month for the third year and Rs 80,000/- per month for fourth and fifth year. Apart from this, each fellow would be eligible for a research grant of Rs 2,00,000/- per year for a period of five years for academic and foreign/national travel expenses.
