The Royal Society of Chemistry, India and Salters’ Institute, UK are conducting a three-day residential Chemistry Camp for ninth-standard students at the institute during December 10-12. The aim of the Salters’ Chemistry Camp is to promote appreciation for chemistry among school students from diverse backgrounds, by providing them an opportunity to explore practical chemistry and inspire them to pursue it at university and further.
Around 60 school students of nonth standard from various state government schools are participatign in this camp which infuses fun in learning chemistry and motivate students to develop both an awareness of, and a long-term interest, in chemical sciences.
The Salters’ Chemistry Camps India, part of the “Inspirational Science Programme” project in India, has been supported by Dr Yusuf Hamied (non-executive chairman, Cipla), a leading Indian philanthropist and pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry.
This is the first Chemistry camp being conducted at IITGN. Since the launch of this programme in 2015, a total of 28 Salters’ Chemistry camps have been completed and around 1,700 students from over 600 schools across 17 states have been trained.
Prof Sairam Mallajosyula, a faculty in the discipline of Chemistry at IITGN, expressed happiness over IITGN’s association with the Royal Society of Chemistry. He said, “School students must get more opportunities such as this to inspire young children to take up science and work towards societal benefits.” Dr Sriram Kanvah Gundimeda and Dr Sivapriya Kirubakaran, faculty members in Chemistry and the coordinators of this event at IITGN, echoed the statement and urged every higher-education institute to give opportunities for a strong hands-on-learning experience for our country’s growth in science.
Salters Chemistry Camps provides an action-packed programme, including hands-on practical activities in university labs, exciting chemical demonstrations, the chance to meet like-minded students, and a taste of hostel life inside the campus.
