Today’s students are faced with cutthroat competition for relatively fewer job positions. Therefore, the career prospects that an institute offers along with holistic development opportunities are among the top deciding factors for a student to choose an institute for undergraduate or postgraduate studies. At IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN), we understand this and have tailored our teaching, programmes, and initiatives to ensure the overall development of a student, with significant exposure to real-life situations.

The institute places great emphasis on ‘learning by doing’ and an interdisciplinary approach, which maximises the potential of each student and helps them not only chart their own path but develop leadership skills. The academic and co-curricular programmes are structured around activities that not only build the self-confidence but also promote creative and critical thinking, eventually contributing to the all-round development of students. Furthermore, the institute offers a great deal of flexibility and additional learning opportunities to each of its students. For example, a BTech student can opt for a second BTech degree or even a dual BTech–MTech or BTech–MSc degree in a branch of their choice. A student can also opt for more than one minor programme. Most importantly, the institute allows a student at the end of his/her first year to change their branch, if they find after entering these fields that their passion lies elsewhere. These various liberal policies empower IITGN students to truly follow their passions and set their own career paths with the full support of the institute.

Knowing that I could potentially switch from Chemical Engineering to Mechanical Engineering, which aligned with my passion, was a major factor in my decision to choose to study at IITGN.

IITGN equipped me with the resources and opportunities required to build a true-to-self and a well-rounded profile, which helped me get admission at Stanford.

In addition, IITGN offers several prospects for students to interact with some of the world’s top researchers through overseas research opportunities or with successful entrepreneurs and businesspersons through their entrepreneurship and innovation development programmes.

IITGN also strongly believes in fostering academia–industry partnerships to promote innovation and research. This is evident from the establishment of the IITGN Research Park, which invites industries to collaborate with IITGN on R&D projects, and IITGN Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre, which is a technology business incubation centre inside IITGN. This incubation centre assists students to turn their innovative ideas into commercial successes. In fact, IITGN is currently incubating multiple companies started by its alumni.

IITGN also has a dedicated Career Development Services (CDS) office, which offers various kinds of services to help students recognise their potential and achieve their dreams. These include help with identifying suitable career options, preparing resumes, preparing for group discussions and interviews, as well as help with acquiring soft skills. In addition, CDS arranges various platforms such as internships, industrial visits, and placements, for students to interact with potential opportunity givers from India or abroad.

In contrast to traditional engineering education, IITGN offers a supportive environment and myriad opportunities to ensure that students develop confidence, critical thinking, leadership qualities, and good communication and networking skills, which are easily the most sought-after skillsets by employers.

Thus, studying at IITGN can open up career prospects in more ways than one. Mr. Nahar describes this aptly: “IITGN provided a well-rounded education and broadened my perspective beyond technical subjects. The various activities I participated in not only provided personal fulfilment but also enhanced my CV, positioning me as a candidate with a holistic skill set and a drive for engagement and commitment. I am grateful for the experiences and knowledge gained, which have laid a strong foundation for all my future endeavours.”
