As the world prepared to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Green Office at IITGN spread the message of swachhata among children of the primary school in the nearby Basan village. The Green Office had started an initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission’s ‘Swacchata hi Seva’ campaign and Basan was selected for implementing various initiatives on solid waste management awareness.

Members of the IITGN Green Community participated in the initiative wherein about 230 primary school children were educated about solid waste management and the importance of cleanliness. The students were divided into two groups, first to fourth standards and fifth to eight standards. The students of the first group were educated on wet and dry waste through posters and various activities like waste segregation. They were also apprised of the ‘My School Cleanest’ campaign. On the other hand, the higher-grade were shown a short video on waste management and were educated on the importance of cleanliness, waste composting and lifecycle of wet waste. Waste segregation activities were carried out with them as well, which also included a quiz. A demonstration of drum waste composting was also given to the students.

Also, under the initiative, a monitor has been appointed in each class to prevent littering. The school was given two drums of 100-litre capacity on pilot basis to start composting waste. Upon subsequent success, pit composting will also be initiated at the school campus. Sanitation workers on the school campus were also educated and trained about the drum composting method.
