In an effort to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of India, Art@IITGN hosted an enchanting evening of Indian classical music on December 7, 2024, at the Jasubhai Memorial Auditorium. The event featured a mesmerising Santoor performance by Vinay Desai, a direct disciple of the legendary Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharmaji. Vinay was accompanied by the accomplished Rajiv Bhatt on the tabla, creating a perfect blend of meditative and dynamic musical expressions.
Before performing, Sri Vinay Desai shared his thoughts, saying, “As you heard, it’s a very ancient form of Indian classical music—dating back thousands of years. The primary goal of music is to make us more sensitive, meditative, and excited, and to bring us closer to ourselves.”
Speaking at the event, Professor Srinivas Reddy said, “The essence of Indian classical music lies in the Guru-Shishya Parampara, the deep personal bond developed with one’s teacher. This tradition not only shapes the art form of music but also extends to other knowledge domains in our culture. Today, we are going to experience some truly beautiful music.”
“Its formality and rich tradition distinguish Indian classical music. One of the most striking aspects of raga music is its spontaneity and the energy the artist brings to the art form. It is a music of the moment and a reflection of our emotional life, blending discipline with creative expression.” Prof Reddy added.
The programme witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, with hundreds of music lovers reveling in the soul-stirring performance.
