The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) will hold an in-person four-day conference-cum-workshop, Ganita Sammelan, from January 19 to 22, 2025. It will have a rich variety of events: plenary talks by distinguished experts (including Prof Manjul Bhargava, Dr MD Srinivas, Prof MS Sriram, Prof K Ramasubramanian, Prof Amartya K Dutta), presentations by other scholars, the release of three major new books, a session in remembrance of the towering scholar, the late Prof RC Gupta, and interactive sessions with school students (including fun and games), among other activities.
Prof Manjul Bhargava, Princeton University, a recipient of the Fields Medal for his mathematical research, will deliver a special lecture highlighting some of India’s high accomplishments in mathematics and explaining why younger generations need to be aware of them.
The event is organized by the History of Mathematics in India (HoMI) project at IITGN in collaboration with the Indian Society for History of Mathematics and the Indian Knowledge Systems division of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The objective is to explore the rich history of mathematics in India and some of the latest research in the field. While some talks may be technical, many should be of great interest to the lay public.
