There has been more interest in earthquake safety in the past couple of decades than earlier. However, what is being built and what young civil engineers are learning is a matter of concern. When these seismic codes came into effect in 2016, there was a concern about the challenges of its implementation. And thus, it was decided to undertake a project with wide consultations.
Sudhir K JainA one-day seminar-cum-workshop on seismic codes IS 1893 (Part 1) and IS 13920 was organised on May 17. The event was arranged as part of the World Bank-sponsored project to deliberate on proposed changes in the 2016 editions of seismic codes IS 1893 (Part 1) and IS 13920.
Under this project, IITGN and associated institutes have reviewed these codes and have made suggestions for further improvement. A commentary highlighting the rationale of the appropriate clauses has been provided and a set of explanatory examples related to both the codes have been developed to illustrate the application of the codes. Professionals and academics interested in seismic design of buildings participated in the seminar-cum-workshop to discuss and review these documents at the draft stage and share their valuable inputs, feedback and suggestions on these documents.
The project team included faculty and students of IITGN, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and VNIT Nagpur. Prof Durgesh C Rai, IIT Kanpur, presented the proposed changes in IS: 1893 and Dr Svetlana Brzev, Visiting Professor, IITGN presented the proposed changes in IS: 13920. These presentations were followed by an open discussion on the documents.
More than 180 participants including industry participants, faculty participants and students of civil engineering from across the country attended this seminar-cum-workshop.
