The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi visited Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar on Oct 7, 2017, at its permanent campus in Palaj. During his visit to capus, he had dedicated IIT Gandhinagar campus to the nation. The dedication ceremony took place in the presence of the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Vijaybhai Rupani, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Prakash Javadekar, the Union Minister of Electronics & IT and Law and Justice, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad and the other dignitaries.
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar was founded in 2008 and is located in Palaj, Gandhinagar. The campus sprawls 397 acres of land on the western banks of the river Sabarmati. The land for the permanent campus of the institute was handed over in July 2012, construction commenced in July 2013 and the institute moved into its permanent campus in July 2015, within just two years from the time of the award of the construction contracts. The striking design and weather-responsive architecture of the campus are inspired by local traditions and pols.
IIT Gandhinagar has come up with very innovative and unique features like Interdisciplinary approach to teaching, a flexible curriculum with strong humanities and social content, societal content and project-based learning.
Sustainability has been a core feature of the campus master plan. The green campus places a lot of emphasis on various sustainability features, including solar power, eco-friendly commute options, efficient water management, healthy waste management practices, zero-discharge, and many other measures. IIT Gandhinagar campus is the first in the country to receive a 5-star Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment for Large Developments (GRIHA LD) for campus master plan.
The Institute has won several accolades for its various innovations, including the HUDCO Design Award 2016 in the Green buildings category (awarded to the Academic Complex of IIT Gandhinagar), the HUDCO Design Awards 2015 for cost-effective rural/urban disaster-resistant housing for IIT Gandhinagar’s Confined Masonry construction and the HUDCO Award for ‘Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment 2013-14’, for IIT Gandhinagar’s construction worker’s welfare programs.
